Annual family meal

What can I say the BFM and family got together with our dear friend and his family at the Khyber Restaurant, which specialises in Indian cuisine.

520A Saintfield Road
Carry duff
Belfast
BT8
UK
http://www.khybertandoori.net

Don't forget the Khyber was a runner up in the 2012 Belfast Telegraph awards as per Joris Minne. We were invited as a family some 10 adults, 7 kids to celebrate the seasons festivities.

Food wise we had daal makhani, aloo gobhi, saag paneer, tandoori chicken and naan cooked in a proper charcoal tandoor(a rarity in NI due to H&S-an absolutely ridiculous ruling!!!),rice and salad.

The restaurant (a 65 seater) is normally closed on a Sunday lunch, but can be available if requested, as we had, so I can't comment on everyday service at the restaurant, but rest assured I feel it would be equally as good.

Amazing parking and food and service, give it a try!!!!

Once again the BFM shares the food love!!! Ciao 4 now!!

Post Christmas treat

The BFM treated my little 6 year old daughter to some Cosmo last night. It was a busy Saturday night and she wanted pizza and pasta,so we went to Cosmo.

We have been there many a time and in general it was pretty good, however I felt it's usually high standards had somewhat slipped a tad. Several things contributed to this being taps in men's room not working, Thai chicken tasted diluted and chicken, unless freshly cooked, tasted as if it was frozen then defrosted. The staff were quite pleasant although could do with some smiling lessons!!!! Some of the dishes were cold and some of the desserts were still frozen. Also Dim Sum and Sushi were running very low.

Having said that my little one loved her pizza, pasta and sausages and especially the desserts. I tried everything and as I said did feel standards have slipped!!

I do hope the management take this on board. Also good to see allergies displayed.

Stuffed after a rather fine Christmas dinner

Hi all the BFM  cooked the starters and the mains, before taking a well earned rest b4 dessert.

For starters I did smoked and flaked salmon on toasted onion bagels with garlic and herb cream cheese, with a side salad of rocket lettuce, cucumber and cherry tomatoes, sautéed mushrooms, baby onions and leeks. To finish the dish I had scrambled eggs with caviar on top!!!!

This went down well, meanwhile for mains I was in charge of the meat. I cooked the remaining Galloway turkey after thawing for 24 hours and brining for 12 hours. I cooked it for 6 hours, the pork with cracklings for 3 hours and pigs in blankets and stuffing for an hour. I cooked the bacon with pine nuts and boiled sprouts. The ladies took care of roasties, potato Dauphinois, parsnips and carrots. I did a creamy pork and turkey jus.

Everyone loved it and now time to relax. We will use the leftovers tomorrow.

Must admit that this fine Norfolk Black from the Galloway farm was the most succulent and tasty turkey I have ever had. I know where I will be getting mine from in the future!!!! Cheers John and Thomas.

To all those people who are working or helping with the homeless or less fortunate a big up!!!!

Festive feed at Corrs Corner

The BFM and lunch buddy decided to have our annual Christmas lunch at Corrs Hotel Restaurant today.

315 Ballyclare Rd
Newtownabbey
BT36 4TQ
http://www.corrscorner.com

I have been here before on numerous occasions but never for Christmas lunch.

It was a toss up between the actual Christmas Lunch package which was three courses for £17.95, coffees and drinks on top, or the Grill a la carte. Check the website for menus.

We both opted for the prawn and dressed lobster with salad and wheaten and a dash of Tabasco. The portion size was fantastic. Then for mains we had the turkey and ham, which was cooked and presented very well and came out fairly soon after starters. The meat was tender and succulent, stuffing was delicious as were the roasties, mash, carrots and cauliflower Mornay. There were, maybe a tad many sprouts. Notable absentees were pigs in blankets and parsnips. Extremely tasty gravy finished off a fine festive feast. For desert I had a Christmas pudding, heated with brandy cream and cream and washed down with water,a small glass of Jack Rabbit Chilean Shiraz and ending with coffee.

We managed to get a cracker each!! The place was geared up for a busy day and night. I'm glad we had our turkey dinner. The service was exceptional, my only suggestion would be to take bit more time between courses as they can tend to be rushed.

Great place for a meal, drink or both.

Last day at market, BFM 1st birthday

Wow what a day, perfect end to a pretty packed 1st year for the BFM. It was the last day of the Belfast Christmas Market brought to you by Allan (MD of Marketplace Europe), Norman and all their staff, including Mervin from MS Services, who built many of the stalls, the Belfast City Council and the security guards. Most important big thanx to everyone who attended.

Secondly it's the BFM's 1st Birthday. What a year!! Big thanx to all those generous people who let me try their food, write about them, gave me support and encouragement. Big thanx to my wife and two girls and family and friends. A year in which I have blogged nearly 300 posts, had over 11,000 views on Wordpress and over 13,000 on Blogspot, completed 145 Tripadvisor reviews, had over 45,000 views, so a big thank you to everyone who has interacted. The BFM is an evolution, thank you sincerely for all the support and onwards and upwards!!!!!

As I'm sitting watching the final of the Apprentice please spare a thought for all those people less fortunate than ourselves, who are homeless or in hostels or missing loved ones, also the market traders who have to work through this weather to dismantle the stalls and return to their respective homes,Bon voyage, cu next year!!!!

Turning to the collection of food for those in need. I must firstly start by thanking Karl who gave me the idea, Allan the owner and Norman the manager who jumped at the chance and gave me lots of support,The SOS bus crew (Joe,George,Gay,Gail,Alison the gate keeper and all at SOSBus NI) for being on board and actually coming and doing the hard work and putting in the long hours at night, the Welcome Organisation who took the biggest load today especially Connel, Paula and Johnny (the latter two did sterling work today), Dianne at the CAB who put me in touch with Carol from the Housing Executive who put me through to Des Marley of the Homeless Unit who told me about SOS group. Thanx to the Simon Community, pity you couldn't facilitate, but there's always next year. Lastly a huge thank you to Karl and Kofi the Jamaican team for jerk chicken and lamb curry and sweet potatoes , the French Tartiflette team for sautéed potatoes and tartiflette ,Le Pattisserie -merci beaucoup pour votre pain et baguette Alec fromage  , the Spanish Tapitas team for chicken, the German Pan House team for fresh vegetables , the German beer tent team for Bratwurst and bread rolls, the Italian team for pastries and the fromagerie for their cheese, the Dutch team for their Stroopwaffel, banana waffles, cheese and sweets and lastly the Morroccan team for all their delicious chicken, lamb, donner meat, beans and veggie tagines with cous cous and rice and all the other traders who have helped. It's better that food goes to those that need it rather than being thrown out, apparently there were lots of thawed bratwurst disposed of b4 we could get them!!!

The market was busy despite the weather and well done to all who braved the elements. There was a chocolate stall which is gluten and dairy free and tasted nice, watch this space, they will be online soon.

After van loaded it was off home to cook home made seek kebabs, mint chutney and lamb kofta and mushrooms for dinner and a well earned rest. Also safe home to all the Traders and happy holidays.

Next year we would like to expand this so any help or suggestions will be gladly received.

Please all have a great and safe holiday period. Think of all those people not as fortunate as us not just over the holiday period but through the year. Try not to overindulge too much!!!!! Be safe and enjoy.

Penultimate Market Collection

Hi all, BFM and SOS Team Leader for Saturday did our rounds on "Panic Saturday",the penultimate night of Belfast Continental Market. Again big thanks to all the Traders who gave us food (Moroccan stall,Tapitas, French stall,Pattisserie, the Pan House and our Jamaican friend Carl).

A lot of stalls sold out which was good, and on a sad note the World Meat Burger bar has finished to facilitate the deconstruction of the market today, Sunday 21st, the Final day of the market.

So if you haven't been please head down. Thank you all for supporting the market, thank you stall holders for your very kind donations. I will be down later. Big thanx to SOS Bus.

In terms of food, picked up a fair bit, less than last night. I also donated more Boost drinks and bowls.

Stop the cuts

The BFM also is a mentor for the Takeover Film Festival at Queens Film Theatre. DCAL want to cut funding by 50%. This will seriously affect Northern Ireland's burgeoning film and TVW industry. Imagine no Liam Neeson, Jimmy Nesbitt to name but a couple of local actors, or The Fall or, dare I say it, Game of Thrones.

So I'm forwarding you this message below, please support:
"Dear Colleague,

I’m sure you will have heard about the impending film sector cuts in the news this week.  Any testimonial or response that you can give via the social media campaign #savefilmni and the online app (link below) can really help.  There is also a petition at QFT that you can sign.  Please feel free to forward this information to your colleagues and other contacts that you know have attended events at QFT,  and if applicable give your students some brief guidance on submitting the online response.

QFT and many other organisations have been asked to prepare for a devastating 50% cut in funding.
Please take two minutes to show your support, as if these cuts are implemented it will have a direct impact on film exhibition and education activity province wide.

The Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL) has asked organisations that are funded through Northern Ireland Screen to prepare for a 50% cut in funding in 2015-16.

The agency supports many of Northern Ireland's best known Film Exhibition and Film Education organisations including Queen's Film Theatre, Belfast Film Festival, Foyle Film Festival, Nerve Centre, Cinemagic, and INTO Film Club.

At a time when the film and creative industries in Northern Ireland are being celebrated on a world stage, the unprecedented level of these proposed cuts puts the future of these organisations at serious risk.

We need your help - the draft budget for 2015-2016 is out now for public consultation and we have until the deadline of 29 December 2014 to make our voices heard about how our public money will be spent.  Please respond to the draft budget today by going to our home page www.queensfilmtheatre.com   and click onto campaign section which will take you to the online app (on top right of the home page).

This app will guide you on submitting a response and has the draft DCAL budget document on the proposed  film exhibition and education cuts, plus a sample letter - feel free to use this letter in its entirety or personalise it with your own message.

You can respond by post or email (addresses in the sample letter), or via the web app - http://objectnow.pgtb.me/R2bx7l

Every letter counts and time is of the essence - please show your support today.

Many thanks for your support.

Best Seasonal Wishes,

Marion.

Update on help feed the needy initiative

It's Christmas time soon and that means market is closing soon. Weather has been erratic, hopefully won't get too cold like last week. SOS bus has been busy so Joe and his team have been collating what they can.

On wet nights like tonight and Friday night when we started, people didn't come into the market,so some stalls stayed closed. Conversely if it's dry, cold and/or damp then market does better but we don't get as much food so it's win win in the sense traders are happy and the needy are happy. Some days more happy than others if u know what I mean.

Have been getting lots of retweets and messages. Please adopt, adapt and improve the idea and let's keep momentum going!! The media and The Lord Mayor have shown keen interest.

I shall hopefully be there Wednesday evening, will you?

Press Release from Belfast Continental Market

Hi all BFM been asked to share this press release on behalf of Belfast Continental Market

"THE BELFAST FOOD MAN AND BELFAST CHRISTMAS MARKET JOIN FORCES TO BRING SEASONAL GOODWILL TO THE HOMELESS

Self confessed local food fanatic and blogger, Dr Vivek Tohani, also known as the Belfast Food Man has been juggling a lot recently, (moving house, along with a busy work load) and now he has taken been proactively doing a good turn for the homeless and less fortunate of the city too.

Dr Tohani has joined forces with the local and international traders of the award-winning Belfast Christmas Market, to gather and distribute unused food to those in need throughout the City.

Vivek Tohani said
“I along with a few other blogging friends wanted to help the needy and less fortunate during the Christmas period and so we got in touch with the Christmas Market to see if they could help. Our timing was perfect and they have been enthusiastic and helpful in the collection of unused food from traders safely for distribution."

Having approached Allan Hartwell, Managing Director of Market Place, (the company who bring the Belfast Christmas Market to the city), they set about working with the traders to prepare left over food for collection and distribution by local charity SOS NI.

Allan Hartwell said

‘As soon as we were approached by Vivek we jumped at the chance in becoming involved in this great initiative, in fact it is something we have wanted to do for quite some time. We have encouraged our traders to take part and are assisting them with guidelines, that, followed will ensure the food is safe to eat and distribute at the end of each trading day.’

Belfast Christmas Market traders serve a wide range of continental foods, freshly prepared on the market each day. Given the strict food storage regulations they often have to dispose of left over cooked food. By working with Dr Tohani and SOS NI they can now ensure their remaining food is put to good use.

Belfast Lord Mayor, Cllr Nichola Mallon, said Belfast City Council is also supportive of the initiative.

‘We are delighted to see that this food will not be going to waste and collectively we have worked to ensure it is delivered to those who need it in the safest manner,” she said.  “Throughout my term in office I have been campaigning to highlight the issue of homelessness and later this week will be hosting a special lunch in City Hall for people whose circumstances sadly mean they are without homes this Christmas.  The acid test of a society is how it cares for its most vulnerable members and I never cease to be amazed by the compassion and generosity of people and organisations right across Belfast”.

Like all good things, the market must come to an end, with the gates closing on this years festive event on Sunday at 6pm, but until then food collected from the market at the close of business each day will distributed for across the city.

For further information and updates on how this initiative is helping please visit www.thebelfastfoodman.blogspot.com OR follow the Belfast Continental Christmas Market on Facebook"

Feeding the needy

The BFM was walking through the Christmas Market a couple of weeks ago and I spoke to a lot of Traders especially Carl from A Taste of The Tropics, serving delicious Jamaican food, about what happened to the food at the end of the night. They all said it was binned and Carl asked me if I could do something about it.

I along with a few other blogging friends did want to help over the Christmas period, but I thought why not help the needy and less fortunate now, between today and when the market closes on 21st December.

I was in the market yesterday and just so happened to pop into the management office where I met Norman, a real nice chap and Alan Hartwell the MD of Marketplace Europe. I gave my pitch and in the words of Lord Sugar I was hired. I fixed up a meeting for Friday at 5pm. Now I had to get a charity on board.

It is quite hard to get someone on board at short notice at this time of year, as they are mainly volunteers with day jobs. Also transport is an issue. So I tried several agencies to no avail, before I was put in touch with the SOS Bus. I rang and spoke to Alison who put me through to Jo (boss) who said he couldn't make it tonight but George could.

Norman and I met at 5pm, we went round all the food stalls and they were all keen on donating any sizeable leftovers. I spoke to George and Norman and arranged to meet at 10pm. Unbeknown to us the heavens opened and lots of stalls shut early (Moroccan, paella, tartiflette and the Bratwurst Schwenkgrille) ,whilst some had sold out (world meats, noodles). So our pledges pulled off and we got boxes of hot casseroles from Belfast Pan House and sausages, lots of twisted baguettes from the patisserie,
Rice from Tapitas and Bratwurst from the German Beer Tent.

I wish to thank Carl and the stall holders for giving me the idea, Alan and Norman for saying yes and facilitating it, all the organisations for their time speaking with me especially Alison, Jo and George and all the stalls that contributed. The SOS bus will pick up and distribute til the 21st December. With our combined efforts let's bring a beacon of light and hope for the less fortunate amongst us. Good luck for the rest of the week to SOS Bus and the Traders.
