Yo Sushi In Belfast

The BFM finally got to check out Yo Sushi in Belfast yesterday. I must say that I was very well looked after by Robin (ex Stormont Castle and Parliament Buildings, serving many a politician from near and far) and his highly skilled and well motivated team, who paid meticulous attention to detail and service. They certainly are a well schooled bunch, led by Robin who does get his hands dirty!!

Yo Sushi was founded in 1997 by Simon Woodroffe after he had spent some time in Japan and liked the look of the kaiten sushi bar and maki roll conveyor belt. He started with £150,000 and sold it for £120m, a nice ROI!!!

The fact that Yo Sushi has opened in Victoria Square, Belfast shows the continuing and increasing confidence of Belfast as a rapidly expanding International centre. 

I have eaten in Yo Sushi across the UK, the first time being in Selfridges in Birmingham over 10 years ago and I immediately fell in love with the idea of the Kaiten Belt and the small plate concept (the latter has been adopted by the Spanish and Italians in particular-a great idea as one can experiment with lots of different tastes and dishes).

Robin explained that the restaurant seats 68 people maximum. The tables are all set with chop sticks, easy chop sticks and spoons, wasabi, soy sauce and pickled ginger, as well as triple filtered still and sparkling water taps (twice filtered,once lasered). There is also a blue coloured bar at the side of the table which when you press the help button on the side it changes colour to red,and a voice calls out your bar number and voilĂ  a genie appears and takes your order!!

 The layout of the restaurant is great. On entry one is greeted and seated around the Central Kaiten conveyor either in a round booth at either end, or square booths or singly. The kitchen is visible from all parts of the restaurant and it's great fun watching the chefs hard at work!! There is a takeaway stand (mainly sushi,available daily from 11.30) by the entrance and the till point is there also. 


There is such a wide and varied range of food with an emphasis on sea food. You can choose from small plates on the kaiten belt which are colour coded and you take off whichever one you like and pay according to colour coded plates. You can also order hot ones as well as main courses. There is a strict hourly check of the belt food on the hour, any food which has past its sticker date is removed from public consumption. There is a great system in place for identifying  allergen and nutritional values of each dish. This is a live description which can be accessed on the free wifi in store on smart phones etc. There are 7 tablets in store for patron usage and you can check online before you arrive. Hygiene is well addressed with a 15 minute buzzer which is there to remind the staff to wash their hands.

Yo Sushi has also been chosen by Disne as the preferred food partner and Yo Sushi has launched The Big Bento 6 to coincide with the release of the movie Big Hero 6 on 30th January.


Food wise I had the Chicken Kyatsu small plate which served chilled from the belt, salmon selection (salmon rolls,sushi and rice and mooli-white grated raffish), miso (tofu hot soup which is refillable as is the tea), duck gyoza (served hot with a nice Housin) and for mains a Spicy Seafood Don Mega Bowl (this had salmon, prawns and squid in a spicy rice broth). The staff were very attentive and knowledgeable and extremely friendly sporting wonderful smiles.

The food looked great and tasted even better, so much so that I thought have to bring the girls for a bite. Robin very kindly presented me with a seafood takeaway box for the girls who ate it last night and loved it.



In summary a great new and refreshing restaurant, with great staff and innovation, very well led and above all extremely good food. It will be busy so book now and enjoy.
