Ku 'Aina

Aloha!! To celebrate my birthday last night, my two daughters, wife and I went to Kua 'Aina in Victoria Square Belfast. Kua 'Aina opened in November last year and is another welcome eatery in Belfast.

It was the brainchild of Terry Thompson who opened the first restaurant on Hawaii's North Shore in 1975. It's famous for its lava rock char-grilled burgers and sandwiches, accompanied by homemade sauces and divine milk shakes.

Kua 'Aina means back country and is a favourite of Barack Obama. The Belfast restaurant is the third in the UK.

On arrival the restaurant looked like a typical Waikiki Beach restaurant along with surf board. It's primarily a diner type restaurant which serves various burgers/sandwiches, sides, sauces, craft beers, shakes, soft drinks, desserts and breakfasts!!!

We were greeted by Derek who seated us and brought the girls colouring in pencils, paper and menus-I must say it is very children friendly. Whilst we waited for our milkshakes (coconut for me served in a classic glass milk bottle and small bowls of banana shakes for the girls) Derek brought us over multi coloured nachos and salsa.

We ordered kids Mahi Mahi fish fingers and fries and Chicken strips with sweet corn and fries. My wife had a halloumi and roasted pepper sandwich and I had a triple decker sandwich of Teriyaki chicken, bacon, lettuce and tomato in poppy seeded bread. To accompany this we had sweet potato fries, homemade slaw, onion rings and mayo. As a birthday surprise I was presented with a lovely chocolate brownie and ice cream.

Now the nachos were warm and crisp and salsa was great. The shakes were fab-having mine served in a classic glass milk bottle was very nostalgic! The girls loved their fish fingers, fries, chicken and sweet corn. My wife really enjoyed the Halloumi and pepper sandwich and my sandwich was amazing. The best part was that you could actually taste the authentic flavour of the charring, giving that super taste of original char grilled Bbq. The slaw was crunchy and not too creamy and the onion rings were thick and juicy. The fries and sweet potato fries were nice and soft. Then the brownie was sweet, melt in mouth and warm...mmmm!!!

Suffice to say this was a mountain of food and we did have to pack and take home-guess lunch is sorted!! Presentation, service and overall ambience was second to none. This is a great place for an alternative type of burger/sandwich diner. Thank you so much to the team (Ciaran the manager and Derek).

V important food allergies

QUARTER OF PEOPLE WITH FOOD ALLERGIES HAVE EXPERIENCED REACTIONS WHEN EATING OUT

Survey shows improvements for those with allergies since new allergen labelling rules came in - but more needs to be done.

Research by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Allergy UK has found that despite improvements, one in four people with a food allergy has experienced a reaction while eating out in a restaurant or cafe since new allergen labelling legislation came in a year ago. The survey also found that nearly one in five (19%) of those allergic reactions resulted in a hospital visit.

The EU Food Information for Consumers (FIC) Legislation came into force in December 2014, and means that food businesses have to make information on 14 allergens available to consumers. This ranges from the most common allergens, such as peanuts and gluten, to less well known triggers for allergic reactions such as mustard and celery. It is estimated that 2% of adults and 8% of children (which equates to around 28,000 adults and 30,000 children) in Northern Ireland may have a food allergy.

The survey, which was carried out to mark Allergy Awareness Week 2016, found that overall, 83% of respondents have noticed an increase in measures designed to make life easier for allergic consumers – including menus marking out allergens, and staff actively checking food information with the kitchen.

More than half (58%) of allergic consumers said that their overall experience of eating out has improved; just 6% said it has got worse. As a result, a similar proportion (52%) say they now feel more confident eating out than they did before the legislation was introduced.

However, people with allergies still report a number of problems when eating out. More than two-thirds (69%) have experienced staff not understanding the severity of an allergy, and how easily a mistake can cause a reaction. A similar number (68%) have seen staff with a lack of knowledge of what’s on the menu or in the food – including staff confusing eggs with dairy, or assuming that the customer was asking for gluten-free rather than avoiding lupin (a grain commonly used in place of wheat). Over half of allergic consumers (56%) said they have been made to feel like an inconvenience due to their allergy.

In total, around a third of those with a food allergy have experienced a reaction in the last year when eating out of the home. The vast majority of these (25%) took place in a restaurant or cafe, with 9% being a result of takeaway food. In most cases (88%) the reaction was self-treated, with 19% of reactions resulting in a hospital visit.

Sharon Gilmore, Head of Dietary Health at the FSA in NI commented:The number of people who have food allergies and intolerances has increased in the last decade and this is something businesses can’t ignore.  Since the introduction of new legislation in 2014, we’re pleased to see real progress in how businesses provide information on allergens but it’s an area that still needs improvement.

We continue to support local businesses and have produced MenuCal, a free online tool that helps food businesses manage the allergy information of the food they serve. We are working very closely with district councils and food businesses in Northern Ireland to ensure we’re providing food people can trust.”

If anyone encounters a food business not providing information on the 14 allergens, they should report it to their district council who will investigate. The survey showed that those affected are currently more likely to report it to staff in the first instance (69%) or complain on social media after the event (23%).

Food businesses have been given flexibility on how they provide allergy information. This can be communicated verbally through explanations by staff or signposted to where or how more information can be found on menus or in additional leaflets.

Vote McCoys crisps

FLAVOUR PARTY TAKES TO THE STREETS IN SEARCH OF VOTES

AS election fever grips the nation, a brand new ‘party’ is hitting the streets of Northern Ireland to canvass for those all-important votes.

The party in question is the ‘Flavour Party’ and the only vote they’re interested in is one for your favourite flavour of McCoy’s Crisps, Northern Ireland’s number one selling ridged crisp.

As part of the brand’s new ‘When Flavour Calls’ campaign, Flavour Party candidates will be calling at homes, offices and shopping centres in the run-up to the May 5 election to canvass for votes and add a little ‘flavour’ to the electoral proceedings.

Flavour Party election campaign manager Ricky Watts of KP Snacks (NI) explained his party’s manifesto.

McCoy’s might be the number one ridged crisp in Northern Ireland but that doesn’t mean we’re resting on our laurels,” said Watts.

Our manifesto is clear and simple - we promise to deliver a fresher tastier crisp with stronger bolder flavours and a new crunchier texture.  And we’ve invested £1m to make sure that these aren’t empty promises.  In fact the only thing that will be empty is your McCoy’s crisp packet after you’ve scoffed its scrumptious contents!

“Furthermore, the only cuts that the Flavour Party will be making are thick cuts – with the launch of our new McCoy’s Thick Cut range.

When it comes to crisps, we want the NI public to continue voting for McCoy’s as their favourite, just as they have done for many years,” concluded Mr Watts.

Across the UK, McCoy’s Crisps are consumed by more than a third of households and one pack is eaten every 15 seconds.  In Northern Ireland, the popular brand enjoys 100% distribution across 350 symbol stores locally for its top three flavours Flame Grilled SteakSalt and Malt Vinegar and Cheddar and Onion

The ‘When Flavour Calls’ campaign will be supported in Northern Ireland by a range of bespoke activities including the annual McCoy’s NI Pub Quiz, the search to find Northern Ireland’s brainiest pub quiz team.

Crisp lovers will also have a chance to win some tasty prizes on the McCoy’s NI Facebook page (www.facebook.com/mccoysni) by voting for their favourite flavour.

BEANNCHOR PLANS EXPANSION OF LITTLE WING AND ANNOUNCES PHASE II OF BULLITT HOTEL

Beannchor – Ireland’s largest hospitality group and owners of Belfast’s award-winning Merchant Hotel – has announced plans for expansion of its restaurant and hotel portfolio.

New sites are currently being explored for the Group’s Little Wing Pizzeria chain, which currently includes six restaurants across Northern Ireland.

Commenting on the news, Little Wing Managing Director, Luke Wolsey said: “The Little Wing brand has gone from strength to strength in recent years. Its success has proven that this is a good business model and we have ambitious plans for growth in the coming years.

“We are reviewing options for further expansion of Little Wing, with a number of sites being investigated across Northern Ireland. Looking to the future, we see the time arising whereby we will have reached a level of critical mass in Northern Ireland and will need to consider options in other markets for further growth. We are already tentatively looking at site locations in both the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain.”

In addition, Beannchor has announced exciting plans for phase two of its new Bullitt hotel concept. The Group has acquired Annsgate House on Ann Street; the property adjoins Lagan House, which is currently being redeveloped to create the hotel.

Drawing on nearly 40 years of expertise in the industry to create a new and vibrant hospitality concept for the city, Bullitt - named after the Steve McQueen movie of the same name - will be an exciting new addition to the city’s social scene when Phase One opens later this year.

Bullitt will epitomise urban chic with stylish, contemporary surroundings, alongside affordable room rates. Located in a prime city centre location, wrapping Victoria Street, Ann Street and Church Lane, the hotel is a stone’s throw from Belfast’s shopping mecca, Victoria Square and the lively Cathedral Quarter. The hotel will be a social hub for city workers, locals and tourists alike, bringing a fresh approach to work, rest and play.

Phase one will feature 44 stylish mod-con clad bedrooms and a lively ground floor café, bar and restaurant will open later this year. Phase two, which is expected to open in 2017 (subject to planning), will add in excess of 30 rooms to the exciting new development.

Commenting on the announcement, James Sinton, Finance Director, Beannchor said: “Recent acquisitions have emanated from our trading confidence in the local market and our ability to create an exceptional new hotel concept for Belfast.

“Subject to planning, the addition of Annsgate House to our Bullitt hotel development will complement the existing footprint of Lagan House to deliver an 80 bed hotel in the heart of the City centre.”

The Beannchor Group owns pubs and hotels across Northern Ireland including The Merchant Hotel, The National Grande Café/sixty6, The Dirty Onion, Cuckoo and The Hillside, as well as six Little Wing Pizzerias, employing over 650 people.

In April 2016, The Merchant Hotel celebrates a ‘Decade of Decadence’ with a suite of luxurious offers to mark its 10th anniversary. For further information, visit www.themerchanthotel.com

Dine Around Deanes

Michael Deane has really got a winner with Dine Around Deanes. This started off during Belfast Restaurant Week in 2013 and is still going strong. Indeed the rest of the dates,up to June end (every Friday from 6-10pm) have sold out!

My partner and I were very fortunate to be invited along to enjoy the experience (the cost per person is £70). A red double decker bus was our mode of transport. We met at Deane and Decano in the fashionable Lisburn Road. This is Michael doing Italian and as such we were treated to Prosecco and Piattini. Piattini quite literally means small plates and we were served up three. One was Pork sausage cooked in a chilli tomato sauce, two was mini conchiglie in pesto and three was a side salad. The sausage was meaty and had a kick to it, pesto was delicious and the pasta was al dente and the salad cooled it all down-an excellent start.Eric and his team really looked after us (there was about 35 people on the tour). Next stop The University quarter.

Deane's at Queens was stop number two and here we were treated to a cosmopolitan on arrival before being shown how to make them and a couple of the group actually had their Tom Cruise moment and made their own!!

Sean and his team made us all feel very welcome and were polite and were always there on hand topping up water and drinks. Chris Fearon had prepared a wonderful starter of Rancini which was extremely tasty and left us all wanting more. It's easy to see why Chris is a regular in The Great British Menu.

Our third stop was the Flagship and Iconic Deanes on Howard Street. This was Michael's original restaurant (I had my 30th birthday here-many moons ago) and has now morphed into EIPIC, Deanes Meat Locker and Deanes Love Fish.

Viva and her team treated us royally and were on hand with Chez Deaneo wines and drinks. The main course here was roast chicken with potato and root vegetables. The chicken was tender and juicy, potato was buttery and vegetables were crunchy with a hint of honey. A lovely main.

Our last stop was for dessert and this was Deanes Deli Vin Cafe. Here Mark and his team served up Chocolate cheesecake and orange sorbet. There was also a very talented young lady playing the guitar and singing.

We all had a great night and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Michael and staff for a great night. If you get a chance I would thoroughly recommend this tour.

Dr B's

Hi guys I humbly share the below with you. Please have a read and acknowledge the great work that these guys are doing!!!!

Barnardo’s Dr B’s Kitchen trainee chefs Jordan Jenkins from Ballyclare and Lauren McCracken from Comber are celebrating after winning silver and gold medals respectively at the IFEX Culinary Ability Awards held recently at the Titanic Exhibition Centre, Belfast.

They are pictured with Dr B’s Chef/Mentor Andrew Gibb.

Dr B’s Trainee Chefs Cook Up A Storm at IFEX

Two teenage trainee chefs from Dr B’s Kitchen in Belfast city centre are celebrating after winning gold and silver medals at the IFEX 2016 Culinary Ability Awards.

Eighteen year old Lauren McCracken from Comber and old Jordan Jenkins (17) from Ballyclare took part in the Culinary Ability Awards held as part of IFEX 2016 and won gold and silver respectively.

Lauren has been a trainee with Dr B’s Kitchen for a year and a half and Jordan joined after leaving school seven months ago. Dr B’s is run by Barnardo’s children’s charity to train young people with learning disabilities for a career in the hospitality industry. It has been running for twenty five years and has an 80% success rate in placing its trainees in paid employment.

Lauren who won gold for her seared duck fillet accompanied with ravioli stuffed with orange and cardamom confit says the support from the staff and other trainees really helped: “I really wanted to take part in the competition and we had a cook off in Dr B’s to be selected. We had to put in a lot of extra work to perfect our dishes but we had great support from everybody. On the day it was amazing. I was overwhelmed by the support from everyone at Dr B’s, it brought tears to my eyes.”

Jordan who prepared a crisp pan fried salmon fillet with a Mediterranean potato, chorizo and fennel melody to take the silver award says taking part has increased his self-confidence: “When I heard about the competition it really appealed to me but at school I would never have gone for it, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to cook in front of so many people and judges but Dr B’s makes you feel you can do it. After I won the medal I had the confidence to go straight in and work on the pass back at Dr B’s which I had never done before.”

Dr B’s Chef/Mentor Andrew Gibb said: “We are delighted for Lauren and Jordan. They worked incredibly hard to perfect their dishes and were under a lot of pressure on the day competing against the other entrants and under the scrutiny of the judges with only 40 minutes from start to presentation, but they rose to the challenge and we are so proud of both of them.”

Both Lauren and Jordan became interested in cooking when they were young through their grandmothers and in the future Lauren would like to open her own bakery like her nanny had. Currently Jordan is continuing his training at Dr B’s while Lauren is due to start full time employment with the Sweet Tree Café in Dundonald.
