Belfast’s historic and award-winning St George’s Market is to host a special night-time event next week, showcasing the best in local food and produce.
‘The Twilight Market’, which takes place on the evening of Wednesday 11 November, will bring together some of the city’s top chefs and restaurateurs with local artisan food and drink producers for a unique celebration of Belfast’s culinary expertise.
More than 100 stalls and pop-up restaurants will tantalize and tempt visitors’ taste buds, while there will be special cookery demonstrations, food tastings, talks and live entertainment throughout the evening.
The Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Arder Carson, said of ‘The Twilight Market’:
“St George’s Market is the jewel in Belfast City Council’s crown and a showcase for all that is good about our city’s artisan food offering. It is a pivotal aspect of the city’s supply chain, and The Twilight Market will be an ideal opportunity for people to enjoy local produce at its best and to be a part of the synergy between local producers, suppliers and restaurants, as well as have a fun evening in the process.”
The Twilight Market is a precursor to Northern Ireland’s ‘Year of Food and Drink’ 2016, and Belfast City Council plans to host more special evening events at St George’s Market throughout the celebratory year.
Michelle O’Neill MLA, Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, added: “I am pleased that my Department is supporting Belfast City Council’s Twilight Market event through the Regional Food Programme.
“This unique event will gather local food producers and pop up restaurants and together with food tastings and demonstrations by chefs, it will showcase the great food offering that we have here in the north. Events such as this promote and establish confidence in our home grown produce to consumers and visitors alike. It also offers an opportunity to increase enterprise in the food and hospitality sectors.
“I encourage people to come along on 11 November to sample our home grown produce and have a fun filled evening.”
The Twilight Market takes place on Wednesday 11 November, between 5.30pm and 11pm. Admission is free. Further details can be found on the Council’s website. Due to the high level of interest shown in the event, visitors may be asked to queue for short periods of time.
The Twilight Market, in partnership with the Department of Agricultural and Rural Development (DARD) through the Northern Ireland Regional Food Programme, will feature in BBC Northern Ireland’s Taste North season, a series of programming across television and radio which explores and celebrates the subject of food and local produce.
