Belfast Bike Scheme
27 April 2015
Belfast’s public bikeshare scheme, Coca-Cola Zero Belfast Bikes, has been launched today.
The Belfast City Council scheme, supported by the Department for Regional Development, features 300 bicycles, based at 30 docking stations positioned across the city centre http://www.belfastbikes.co.uk/en/belfast/locations/
Almost 1500 people have registered for the scheme ahead of today’s launch. Membership costs £20 for an annual subscription or £5 for a 3 day membership for visitors, tourists and casual users.
Bikeshare schemes are mainly aimed at facilitating short journeys, so the first 30 minutes of each rental are free of charge and the next 30 minutes will cost just 50p. There are small incremental charges per half hour thereafter.
To use the scheme, all users must register a debit or credit card, to which hire charges will then be charged directly. Failure to return a bicycle after 72 hours will result in a direct fine of £120.
Hiring one of the Coca-Cola Zero Belfast Bikes is quick and easy and uses smart technology to detect a user’s location and the number of available bikes at docking stations nearby. Members can either swipe their membership card at the on-street terminal to release a bike or they can use the Nextbike app to find the nearest available bicycle, log it out and return it. Non-members can sign up on-street at one of the 30 terminals, on the website (www.belfastbikes.co.uk<http://www.belfastbikes.co.uk> ) or by calling the hotline: 03433 571551.
Belfast Lord Mayor, Councillor Arder Carson said: “These bikes are a superb addition to the city’s transport links, a boost to its economy and a further enhancement to our tourism offering.
“Thanks to sponsorship by Coca-Cola Zero, we can keep down the price of both the annual membership and the hire charges for this fantastic addition to Belfast. Short journeys can be made so quickly and cheaply – it’s a great way to get across town and to see more of the city.
“We have already had a huge amount of interest in the scheme, with lots of enquiries about extending it. We’re hoping it will be a big success and we’ll be able to look at expanding the network in the near future. ”
Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy said: “Cycling offers an enormous range of benefits. It’s healthy, it’s low cost and sustainable, and it’s fun!
“I am delighted to support this scheme, both in terms of the funding my department has committed and by adding my own personal support for this forward-thinking initiative.
“Cycling, whether for recreation or short distance commuting can help us develop and maintain an active personal lifestyle and I would encourage everyone living, working, or visiting Belfast to give the Belfast cycle hire scheme a try.”
The Belfast Bikes scheme is supported by Coca-Cola Zero, which also sponsors bikeshare schemes in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway.
Frank O’Donnell, general manager of Coca-Cola HBC in Ireland and Northern Ireland said: “Our investment in Coca‑Cola Zero Bikes is part of our wider commitment to help encourage active healthy lifestyles and we hope this scheme will enable more people to integrate cycling into their everyday lives, with the option of a healthier and happier commute. Bikeshare schemes all over Ireland – and in all the major cities of the world – are proving extremely popular and I’m sure the people of Belfast will embrace it too.”
The scheme, which is part of Belfast City Council’s Investment Programme 2012-15, will be operated by public sector service specialist, NSL. Docking stations are positioned from the Odyssey Arena to Bradbury Place, from Millfield to Central Station and the Gasworks, linking up with the Lagan towpath and National Cycle Networks. Operating hours for hire are 6am – 12 midnight. Bicycles can be returned to a docking station 24 hours a day."

Nepal quake
It is with great regret that over 1000 have lost their lives in the 7.9 earthquake that epicentred in Nepal and affected Tibet, Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. Our collective thoughts and prayers go to all the families and friends who have lost loved ones, have injuries or lost their homes.
People felt tremors in Delhi!!! The base camp on Mount Everest was buried by an avalanche, and people died there. Communications are down. I would urge everyone to donate something however big or small to help these people in their hour of need.

The goodness of turmeric
HPV is a virus that promotes the development of cervical and oral cancer. There is no cure, but curcumin may offer a means of future control, they said. "Turmeric has established antiviral and anti-cancer properties," said corresponding author Dr Alok Mishra of Emory University, Atlanta, US. "And according to our new findings, we could say that it is good for oral health too," he said.
Mishra's research group first noted the effect of curcumin on HPV and cervical cancer cells in 2005. The antioxidant slowed the expression of HPV, suggesting that curcumin could control the extent of HPV infection. "Since HPV-related oral cancer cases are on rise, we tested the same hypothesis on oral cancer," Mishra said. "They turned out to be some very interesting findings," he said.
The new research indicates that curcumin turns down the expression of HPV in infected oral cancer cells by downregulating the levels of cellular transcription factors AP-1 and NF-kB.
These findings could suggest a new therapeutic role for curcumin in cancer control, researchers said.
While Mishra did not comment on the therapeutic benefits of turmeric in cooking, he said that the use of curcumin and other anti-oxidants may be good for health in general, and HPV-related oral cancers in particular."

Folktown day 2 and pizza
Twenty five years ago I read that a pizza shop in Newcastle, County Down, created a maternity pizza which was a plain cheese and tomatoe thin crust pizza with banana and tuna and its still on the menu as the maternity pizza!!!
At the slightly rejigged Folktown market there is a pizza horse box-more shortly. Firstly the additional stalls at this city farmers market are a fruit and veg stall, another popcorn stand and Belfast Cookery School had a van also, there was also a doughnut stall and Curry Sauce NI. I was presented with a bag of all things chicken from the Market Butcher-more next week.
Now more about the Pizza Box. Jamie from Glengormley got a horse box and converted it into a wood fired pizza box last year. The oven was specially made by a company in England. Ever since he has been busy, good selection and price (I tried some of the veggie pizza). The pizzas take 10 minutes to make and well worth the wait.
The humble pizza was first recorded as a dish in AD 997 in a Latin manuscript in Lazio, Italy. The modern pizza was born in Naples in the late 18th/ early 19th century and it came to the USA with Italian migrants in 1905. Lombardi’s was the first US pizzeria. In 2009 the Neapolitan Pizza was safeguarded in the EU as a Traditional Special Guaranteed dish.
It is in effect a flat bread with toppings. It shares a common etymology with Greek/Latin word pitta. So there are similarities and variants eg pitta pockets, stromboli, calzone and of course the pizza.
Pizza is cooked usually in a coal or wood fired oven (the best in my opinion as it imparts most flavour). It is also made in conveyor belt type electric or gas ovens. It can also be cooked from first principles (ie make your own dough, sauce and toppings and cook at home usually in a gas or an electric oven on a pizza dish or stone), cooked pre made up (ie from supermarkets or built with pre made bases and add own toppings) or from frozen. This can be bought as slices or whole.
The pizza, if cooked in a restaurant/pizza joint, is usually placed into and removed from oven on a flat utencil (made of aluminium) called a peel. The pizza concept has been adopted and adapted by many different cuisines. For example I have just returned from a trip to Vancouver and had a butter chicken (Indian styled) pizza which had a garlic/ginger/masala tomato base, butter chicken, chilli, cheese and coriander-absolutely beautiful.
The base varies (thin, thick and deep pan), as does the crust-plain or stuffed (I love stuffed as then there is less wastage), then the tomato layer which should be tomato sauce (with onion, garlic and basil) and the toppings and there are as many as the length of your arm, my favourite traditional one is pepperoni, although the butter chicken is my all time favourite!!! Cheese is usually mozarella. Traditionally the pizza is round but when tv chefs get their hands on them they make “rustic” pizza- to me thats just not what pizza should be!!!!
