Happy 25th birthday to Castlecourt

Hi everyone,I can't believe Castlecourt is going to be 25 this Saturday!!!!

I can still remember it first opening when I was a mere lad of 17!!!! I got a wee part time job in Debenhams as well. It's seen many troubled times, but has stood the test of time and is the quintessential proper shopping centre.

There are over 70 shops both small and large, local and national. There is ample, very keenly priced parking for upto 1600 cars (max £4.70 per day-too cheap if you ask me!!!). I believe this was Debenhams
first foray into Northern Ireland.

It has a proper food court with food from Italy, China, America and local sandwiches as well as the various coffee bars and an amazing ice cream stand.

Castlecourt was built by John Laing and was the former Grand Central Hotel. It was bombed 5 times during construction, and four times after it opened in 1990. It is the third largest centre in NI with coverage of 335 000 square feet. It's previous owner was Westfield who sold it and it is now run by CBRE. The MD of CBRE Enda Luddy said shopping centres will be "Destination Consumption Hubs" ie all singing and dancing leisure/shopping/entertainment centres. So planners and Belfast City Council do take heed.

In the meantime make a bee line to Castlecourt this Saturday and help to celebrate its 25th birthday, after all it's a tried and tested integral part of Belfast!!
